Under the floor of a big house in the Tokyo suburbs live 14-year-old Arietta and her parents. They are a family of tiny “borrowers” who take what they need to survive from human beings but in such small amounts that no one notices or discovers their existence. Arietta, however, in one of her raids on the garden is seen by Show, a 12-year-old human boy who is staying there in his aunt’s house while awaiting a very risky heart operation. Although this sighting terrifies her parents, who immediately prepare to leave, Arietta is sure she can reply on Show and a short-lived but big friendship springs up between them. |
